Walter Koenig, the actor best known for playing navigator Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek television series, died Monday. He was 90.

Talent agent Zachery McGinnis confirmed the death in a statement. Koenig died at his home in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles.

McGinnis described Koenig as a talent whose warmth and performances left a lasting mark on fans. The agent noted that Koenig inspired audiences through his optimism, humor, and adventurous spirit. Beyond his work in science fiction, his career showcased his versatility and love for acting.

Koenig’s passing leaves only two surviving marquee cast members from the original 1960s series. William Shatner, who played Capt. James T. Kirk, is 95. George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu, is 89. The cast has been reduced by the deaths of Leonard Nimoy in 2015, DeForest Kelley in 1999, James Doohan in 2005, and Nichelle Nichols in 2022.

Takei issued a statement on Instagram remembering his colleague. He called Koenig a thoughtful man and a loyal friend. The two actors met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s and remained friends for nearly six decades. Takei noted that Koenig was the best man at his 2008 wedding. Their shared birthday, September 14, added a personal layer to their friendship.

Takei said he would always treasure sharing that date with Koenig. He described the actor as more than the character of Chekov, noting that Koenig was also a writer and a teacher. Takei thanked the fans who loved the actor and encouraged them to keep navigating a steady course.

The original Star Trek series ran for three seasons on NBC from 1966 to 1969. The show produced 79 episodes. Koenig joined the cast during the second season. The series, set in the 23rd century, aimed to show how characters from different races and nationalities could work together peacefully in the fictional universe created by Gene Roddenberry.

Koenig reprised his role as Chekov in seven feature films. These included Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979 and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in 1982. He also appeared in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock in 1984, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home in 1986, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier in 1989, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 1991, and Star Trek Generations in 1994.

Before Star Trek, Koenig began his television career in the early 1960s. He appeared on shows such as General Hospital and I Spy. He landed the role of Chekov in 1967. He later took a recurring role in the 1990s sci-fi series Babylon 5. He also performed voice-over work for Star Trek video games and made a cameo on Star Trek: Picard in 2023.

Koenig remained active in the industry until shortly before his death. He won the best actor award at this year’s Independent Shorts Awards for his performance in Mr. Fleischmann. McGinnis said Koenig never shied away from the Chekov character and gladly interacted with fans at conventions. The agent stated that Koenig understood what Star Trek meant to people and embraced the community that grew around the franchise.
